STEP 16 – MOOD SWINGS

We all have emotional highs and lows from time to time—MOOD SWINGS where we feel sad, followed by a happier, more cheerful frame of mind some time later.

But mood shifts in those with a severe low mood can be extreme, alternating between acute feelings of happiness and well-being and excessive anger and irritability. Such mood swings can range from intense on one occasion to a subtler experience the next and can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days.

An emotionally high state can include symptoms such as fast-talking (or just being extremely talkative), feeling energetic, engaging in risky behavior, feeling irritable, experiencing sleeplessness, and being more active than usual.

An emotionally low episode may include feeling sad or worthless, crying, lethargy, having trouble concentrating, difficulty sleeping, eating either too much or not enough, thoughts of death or self-harm, and losing pleasure in activities that were once enjoyed.

If these mood swings come on very suddenly or are accompanied by thoughts or talk of self-harm, urgent medical attention is required.

Essential Oils that are energizing and invigorating as well as relaxing and calming can be very beneficial for sufferers. These oils include:

• Bergamot

• Petitgrain

• Wild Orange

• Lemon

• Tangerine

• Douglas Fir

• Grapefruit

BERGAMOT Essential Oil has a wonderful ability to cleanse, purify, and enliven, but is also helpful for those with anxious feelings. Its uplifting aroma can help to reduce sadness and feelings of stress.

PRACTICAL USES

• Diffuse in the classroom, at work, or at home when stress levels or tension are high.

• Apply to the skin while showering and inhale deeply to experience BERGAMOT’S calming aroma while enjoying its purifying skin benefits.

• Change regular tea to Earl Grey with the addition of BERGAMOT.

• Apply to the feet before bedtime or use with Fractionated Coconut Oil for a calming and relaxing massage.

• Add one to two drops to your DIY skin care cleanser.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

DIFFUSION: Use three to four drops in the diffuser of your choice.

INTERNAL USE: Dilute one drop in 4 fl. oz. (120ml) of liquid.

TOPICAL USE: Apply one to two drops to desired area. Dilute with Fractionated Coconut Oil to minimize any skin sensitivity.

CAUTIONS

Possible skin sensitivity. Keep out of reach of children. If you are pregnant, nursing, or under a doctor’s care, consult your physician. Avoid contact with eyes, inner ears, and sensitive areas. Avoid sunlight or UV rays for up to 12–24 hours after applying product.
